Greenspaces, like those found in the Greenbelt, are critical to maintaining key ecological systems in urban areas. There are 21 Greenbelt-protected urban river valleys. By protecting urban river valleys as part of the Greenbelt, we:
- Ensure freshwater conduits are protected.
- Maintain critical habitat for freshwater fish
- Provide cool oases of greenspace during hot summer months
- Provide important natural infrastructure for developed areas
- Protect communities from flooding
- Provide habitat for species at risk
The vision for Bowmanville is an encircling belt of greenspace connected by walking trails. The Bowmanville Creek Valley is a key link in this vision.
