The Mississauga arose from a group of people who departed the main migration at the second stopping place (Niagara). While the main group continued west along the shores of Lake Erie, the Mississauga traveled north toward Georgian Bay and eventually settled in an area around the Mississagi River north of Manitoulin Island.

The name Mississauga comes from the location where they chose to settle and means “Those at the great river mouth”.
