The most exciting event to occur at Camp 30 was the Battle of Bowmanville. Tensions between Britain and Germany of the treatment of POWs led to each country shackling a number of their prisoners. When Canadian guards attempted to shackle the Germans at Camp 30, the prisoners barricaded themselves in a number of buildings and armed themselves with whatever they could find. The standoff lasted until 100 Canadian soldiers were requisitioned and arrived to use hockey sticks and water hoses to force the Germans to surrender the buildings.
